Duties
The primary responsibility of this position is to support investigations across a wide range of cases for the department including, but not limited to:
- Identify, acquire, and analyze digital evidence from a multitude of media sources such as cell phones, computers, flash drives, mass storage media, drones, SIM cards, and other digital media, using industry standard forensic tools.
- Serve as the technical advisor throughout the life cycle of digital investigations. Gathering all available information to assess the needs of the case to provide technical guidance, investigative strategies, and provide case updates as deemed necessary to all stakeholders.
- Provide expert witness testimony in the field of cell phone data extractions and prepares documents and media for case agents and Commonwealth Attorneys as required.
- Provides training and instruction to law enforcement officers and civilians on proper digital forensic techniques used to identify, seize, secure, and transport digital evidence; on digital-related crimes and forensic techniques; and on proper handling of evidence. Produce thorough and detailed reports documenting the examinations and analysis of digital evidence.
- Perform other as required.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree in forensic science, criminal justice, a natural or physical science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Knowledge of basic practices and procedures utilized in the investigation of crime scenes and evidence collection and preservation.
- Ability to learn to operate a variety of forensic and investigative equipment (e.g. photographic, fingerprinting, laboratory).
- Ability to work at the scene of violent crimes or serious vehicle accidents.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
Preferred qualifications:
- Prior experience with digital evidence in the prosecution of a criminal case
- Multiple years of Law Enforcement or Forensic experience
- Successful investigation of several cases
- CCO – Cellebrite Certified Operator
- CCPA -- Cellebrite Certified Physical Analyst
- Magnet Axion AX100 or AX200
- Proficient in using cell phone forensic programs such as Cellebrite, Magnet Axiom and/or Graykey, to ensure proper preservation and extraction of digital evidence from iOS and Android operating systems.
This position is considered Critical Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug testing and alcohol testing. The use of medical marijuana for this position is prohibited. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check. Must be a US citizen or have been a lawful resident of the US for the past ten consecutive years.
